Little bit of insight into my project. (XS 650)

Hey guys, figured I'd throw up a couple pictures of what I'm working on. Yet another long term project, this one won't be done for at least a year or so, but I'm having a blast building it.

Specs:
1978 XS650
2004 zx6r front forks
Chrome spoked wheels front and rear
240 rear tire, 120 front
Clip-on bars
Lot's of other good stuff yet to be bought

So here's the concept, I know there's a lot of people lately that will hate on the large rear tire, but since I was 12 I knew that if I ever built a chopper it'd have to have a 240 on it, so that's what I got, and I love it!
The bike will not have a kickstand, the rear half of the frame and the swingarm I will fabricate myself, it will hinge at the bottom frame-rails, and will have an air cylinder attached. When I park the bike, It'll simply set down flat on the frame, then lift up when I go to leave.
The tank will be a standard sportster tank, but I'm going to build an exocage around it to give it some pop.
I'm running the full twin disc front brake setup from a 2004 zx6r-I had one of those before, and I love being able to stop well.
The clip-on bars look hot, but I just might come up with a newish idea (i'm sure someone has done them before) but they'd be clip-on mini ape hangerss. Could definitely look pretty cool

I'm building my tubing bender right now- should be done in a couple weeks or so, as soon as that's ready, I can finish chopping the rear half of the frame off and building the new rear section.

I know this bike isn't very traditional, but I'm all about expanding new borders and new challenges for myself, and I'm thinking that this project has what I'm looking for, and to be honest, I'm very excited with what it's looking like so far.

I just finished building a supercharger system for my old car from scratch, here's the complete build-up log from that if you'd like to see some of what I've done in the past.
http://forums.neons.org/viewtopic.php?t=254466

Now I'm looking for something new, and I can't wait to get into this further.
Progress will be slow because my wife and I are paying off some debt, and we have a limited allowance, but I'm pretty good at stretching money, as I'm sure many of you are as well, Ebay is my friend

Enough talk, Here's the sweet bike when I got it.
Very hot

took it down to the bare frame quickly, mocked up the new forks

Got my wheels and tires, I LOVE this thing

Time to start chopping!

Now keep in mind all that rear frame section will be gone eventually, this was just a basemark because that's about where I'll be sitting on the finished product.

Think I'll be low enough.

And finally, here's my super sweet MS Paint version of what the frame and bike should look like when done.

Not a chance, that bucket is an integral part of the frame!

a bit more

A bit more since I just finished reading your supercharger stuff.

Admittedly I skimmed the end. Did you ever list the increases in performance? Did it increase your mpg along with power?

I am looking into to supercharging a bike.

Ummmm.......

We're back to that box with the label that reads "Things that work" again.....

If you're pivoting the rear end were I've drawn the white circle, you might want to think about what's going to happen to the chain tension every time the rear section moves.

You can't just slap the pivot where ever the fancy takes you.

The bike won't actually pivot there while riding. It'll act like a rigid when the bike is in riding form. Then you you stop to park, an air valve will let the air out of the cylinder and it'll set down on the frame.
I've also designed a tensioner that will take care of the slack in the chain when I set it down so it doesn't look sloppy.

I didn't get a chance to put the car on a dyno after I finished it, but there was a serious increase. Not as much as my Turbo system that I built, but still very nice.

MPG is going to go down, I don't care what motor you put it on, even with the best management you can get, when you make more power, the mileage will go down, just a fact of life and physics.

Still got pretty good though, about 30mpg

Hey zx6r - Your plan is pretty cool and the parts are looking good. Where did you get the chrome wheels ? Would those fit any xs ? (I'm looking for some for my xs).

And I hope you don't mind me saying this, its obvious that you spent a bit of time planning your bike, and I like what you have so far, but it does look kind of low. You will need a little bit of clearance for when you take a corner, even if there are no speed bumps around. Unless its going to be a show bike. changes are easier now, as opposed to after you get your frame together - if you need to make a change. I don't know - maybe its even ok the way it is.
Anyway, its looking pretty neat - keep us posted.

Yeah the wheels are from Ebay, and I'm having to do a lot of modifications to make them fit, so definitely not bolt-on.

The pictures I posted up would be where the bike will sit when the air cylinder is depressed allowing the bike to sit flat on the frame.
When I go to take off, the air cylinder will expand and push the bike up to riding position which should give me plenty of clearance when actually riding.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Sky, Just a quick question, how tall are you? 6'3"? 6'4"? Just curious because I'm 6'2" and I need a reference because I'm thinking of how far I should mount the seat from the bars. You look pretty stretched out in the pics and I dunno if I want to sit that way for long rides. Come to think of it, the bars you're planning look like they'll stretch you out a bit more?

For some reason I always look really tall in pictures I'm 6' 1" although, I do have a 6' 5" wingspan.

the clip-on bars definitely stretch me out, but I'm not planning long distance rides on this thing, plus I've been riding sportbikes for the last 5 years, so i'm used to being put in odd positions

Also, the front end is far from bolt on, the thing has been a pain in the ass to get it mounted right. still finishing that up right now.
