Thanks Dave, you rock!

I can't remember to save my life . .
But when I was helping a friend out syncing a set of carbs on his snowmobiles, I noticed that some of his carbs where 'slide' style (metal plate slides up / down, instead of the cylinder style)

He said they work much better?

Any ideeaars?

Sled carbs are usually a bit cheaper on the net for some reason, so IF they would work better, that'd be cool!

My Build update 2/2/07

Well here is an update on my build. I bought a WCC Villain gas tank and then a very special thanks to our own member MCC for getting all my parts together and giving me a good deal on everything I needed. Well thanks for putting up with my many questions, but we got these parts ordered today.

Front 41mm complete overhaul kit.
21 x 2.15 60 spoke billet hub single flange front wheel.
90/90 21" Avon venom tire.
21" tube
21" rim strip
18"200/55 Avon am23 rear tire
18 x 5.5 60 spoke billet hub wheel
Neck cups with bearings and internal fork stops.
Also bought the offset sprocket needed since I am running 200mm tire.

I have a pair of triple tree’s also coming so once everything gets here I will have everything needed to get my bike into a roller. I need to get a Rear fender so I can built the seat pan. What size metal do I need to make a seat pan, it is a single seat with a single mountain bike gas filled shock that I also got in today. I am going to build some mild apes so once I get the seat on I can figure out what size I need to make my bars.

But I am happy this thing is moving along I hope to be able to ride it this summer but we will have to see how the funds come because I need to get the hand controls and get some forward controls then make them into mids.

Well I am going to start to take pictures as soon as I start to get parts and get this build mocked up. I am sure I will have many questions about things as I go. Oh I have one not.

When you mount the gas tank do I put a rubber strip or anything on the backbone or do I just mount it on top of the back bone?
Well thanks.

I am about to mount my tank and I need to know do you just sit the tank on the backbone, or do you leave some space between the tank and the baackbone?

Also on the tank mount do you weld the cross bar or bolt it on there?

Well I got all the parts that I have ordered, but the rear wheel was the wrong one so it will need to be sent back and get the correct one shipped back. Thank god DNA is in CA so it is only a 2 day ship from them to me.

I am going to start off tomorrow putting my first front end together and get the triple trees installed and the for stop. Need to do some looking around tonight since it is the first time I have done any of this, trying not to fuck things up too bad.

I am not sure how much I will get done but if anyone has any answers for my tank questions I would like to get my tank installed or close to it. I hope to be to a point to take some pictures so I can start this thread of my build. I have watched so many of you and have wanted to do this for many, many year and to be honest I can't believe it is time to start my build.

Thanks,

Oh went out to the shop to start to work on the front end and I need some help..... How the hell do you get the bearing cups in? I tried everything I know how and well lets just say they are sitting on my bench and not on my frame.

Anyone have something that I can do with my normal shop tool without having to go somewhere to have them pressed in.

Oh yeah heat, chrome, bad bad bad man. Looks like I will be adding the cups to the chrome list LOL.

I know everyone here has ran into this what is your litttle trick to get them in?

throw the cups in the freezer and heat up the neck........should drop right in......just make sure they are in the right place before the neck cools off

You'll need:

3/4" all thread rod, about 8" long

2-3/4" nuts

2-3/4" wide/thick washers (fender washers)

The fender washers should be about the same OD as the ID of the bearing cups. Slide the rod through the neck, put the cups on each end, then the washers, then the nuts.....Get a couple long as wrenchs and crank it all down. The washers should keep everything relatively straight, although you may need to rap on the corners with a rubber mallet if they go crooked.

This process is about your only option once the frame is painted since you don't want to be burnin' the paint.

Make sure you press in the bearing races before you put in the cups though, they are a real pain in the ass to get back out.

-Mike

Yeah I am going to do what you said I went and bought the stuff to do it today. A friend of mine is coming over tonight and we are going to try to get them in tonight.

I would like to get them in so I can get the front end built I am tired of looking at a bare frame it is time to get moving on this build.

I hope DNA will have my replacement rear wheel next week so I can get this into a roller.

Let me ask you guys something, how much do you pay to have your tires mounted? I called a couple of places and they want between $60 and $70, hell for that I can buy the tire mounter from Harbor Freight. Has anyone bought one of those? and if so does it work or is it shit?

I have a question about the bearing races, there is a open side and the other side has a lip on it. Does the lip side go towards the inside of the cup or on the outside? I want to make sure I press them in the correct way first time.

Thanks,

Tank: I used a Villain tank on my buddy Matt's build, but I modded the front of the tunnell to sit higher up on the b.bone.
The cross pieces for the tank where welded onto his frame.
I'm sure yours would be done the same.

You may want to take a pic of the bottom of your tank, so I can double check it, and see. I'll give you a 'for sure' answer that way.

Cups: I plinked mine in a tad bit, with a dead-blow hammer, and then used a vise, and 2 pieces of 2x4 to make a 'press'.
Worked out GREAT.

Freezing and heating work reall good too!
That's how you 'mate' two things with close tolerances, and it works like a charm!

The method using the threaded rod, and washers, is great too!
That's basicly how a 'barring press' and/or 'cup press' is really made!
I used to use a similar gadget for doing them at the bicycle shop I managed.

Sam -

ps As for what cup is what . .
The one with the 'lip' may be the top one, setup like that for your 'dust cover' to seat on?

Mine where the exact same, so I'm no real help here. lol

Well lets catch you up, sorry no pictures on this update.

Heat from the night before screwed up the lower bearing cup, but I did get it pressed in. I found out that the fork stop I have is pimmed in the triple tree, the triple tree I have is for screw in so I will be buying a new set when I do final build after paint. I some how F**ked up the bottom bearning so the night was not going my way. So I will be buying all new shit andlooking at how to put the bearing in correct not sure what I did but what ever it was it is done LOL.

I took everything out of the box to put my front end together printed out some instuctions given in this post and I was way lost couldnt tell what was what, that and the beer I decided at about 1:30am it was time to head back in the house. so I have triple trees on and that is about it.

I am going to look for a instuction with image to try to put the front end together, now this is when I knew someone around my area to help out I was hoping to get that done tonight so I am behind schedule big time. Need to put some longer hours in the shop to get this thing done in time to ride it sometime this summer, god I hope.....

Well I will try to remember the camera tomorrow to take some pictures.

chopd yeah it bring the front of the tank way up so I will need to make a peace to fill in the gap in the from of the tank, I thought something was wrong so I am glad to hear you had to do that also.

Talk to you tomorow,

James
