I worked some more on my handlebars today, when I changed to the new forks I lost the mounting point for the headlight. That thing looks stupid anyway, so I'm building an integrated mount with my handlebars I just completed the first step today with the front crossbar, but it will have another piece of piping the same size curving downward to where the light will mount. It should look really neat and function good as well. Then I did the final welding on the handlebars and added the tabs where the screws go to keep it tight.

Let me know whatcha think.
Thanks
Sky

Worked a little more on the bike today. To this point the frame had just been tacked together. I welded it up solid today, and in the process I realize my TIG welding skills are sorely lacking in beauty. They're nice n' strong, but not as nice as I was hoping they would turn out.

I also built and welded up the seat pedestal, this will have a square plate welded to it, with four holes, and the seat pan will have four holes in it, with nuts welded to the backside, so it will bolt right up.

Not a whole lot of looks progress, but stuff that needed to be done

thanks for looking!
Sky

you know , looking at all this very closely.. i can see you are doing a nice job.. BUT .. i must share blackjacks thoughts on the pivot point.. you will have alot of stress riding on the air cylinder/shock .. both at riding level & especially to make it raise from the lowered position.. changing that pivot point while its still optional, may save you some aggravation later .. plus add to the finished look .. your idea is great , but from a functional stand point , i have to look at all possibilities.. blackjack has many years experience in these 650's .. just the fact he replied to this thread, with such a question alone, would trigger some serious head scratching & thought on my part.. dont take me wrong, i like what your doing.. but if it could be bettered ???

Hmm, that's a very good point...

Talking about stresses on the air cylinder, if you put a big enough cylinder to handle that stress and keep it rigid when you ride, it might be good to beef up the pivots and the mounting points of the air cylinder. The backbone where the cylinder mounts will have to be braced as well. Things will bend or break after continued hammering everytime you hit a bump.

On a side note, congratulations on your baby girl! When's she due? First week of March or thereabouts?

Hey guys I appreciate the comments, and trust me, I don't believe that I have this all figured out by a longshot, and I've even changed a lot of my mounting ideas as of late. We'll see how it works!

Also, Carld- trust me, there will be plenty of bracing and gussets once the final design is done

Here's what I just posted on another board:

OK, so I should've had an update for you last weekend, but I really wasn't happy with the work that I did, so I took it apart again and worked on it more tonight. I'm much happier with how it looks now.

Mainly I worked on getting the swingarm mocked into place.

I've also decided to change my mounting point for the air cylinders. Initially they were going to be mounted with a bracket coming off of the backbone. But now I see that won't work with the way the forces are pushing while riding.
While it is by no means perfected, I'm now going to weld up a support bar going between the two upper bars that the cylinders will attach to.

I'm not going to lie and say this is all going to work out perfectly, but I'm having a great time building it and seeing what can and can't work, hey, you never know until you try right?

Somewhat close to riding position- this should be enough ground clearance for a cruiser. I guess I'll find out.

thanks guys, I appreciate you taking the time to check this out!
Sky

So there's been plenty of people concerned about ground clearance on this bike. So I decided to take a couple of pictures at about the final riding height and took some leaning pictures.

It looks like it's going to be just fine to me.
This thing certainly is not giong to be a corner carver, and that's fine with me. this thing could be scary to ride
But it shouldn't drag if I'm smart. (riiiiiiiight)

and this last pic I happen to really like:

thanks for looking

Bro, it's looking good. I really want to see this on the road. Just remember, engine weight plus your weight plus centrifugal force will compress the forks and tires, bringing you closer to the ground. Even if you don't corner much, your bike may not be too fun to ride if you're too constrained when you use it. Also, what about speed bumps? Can you clear them? If you're confident you won't scrape anything, then go for it.

Ha, speed bumps are a definite no go I'lll just have to try to avoid them as much as possible. I just won my sportster tank on ebay last night, so I should be able to get started on the exo-cage for that once it gets here.

thanks!
Sky
